How Invisalign Works

Every Invisalign treatment begins with a consultation with Dr. Mackie. During this visit, our team will collect X-rays and conduct a thorough examination of your bite and dental alignment. Based on our findings, we’ll outline what your treatment will look like and can even show you how your teeth will change over time using our digital smile design software.
Once you begin treatment, you’ll return to our office every six to eight weeks to collect your new series of aligners and for a quick check-up to make sure that your teeth are moving as intended.
The Benefits of Invisalign

Many of our patients choose Invisalign aligners because of the countless benefits that they offer over traditional braces, including:
- Ability to eat all of the same foods you normally do.
- Easier to brush and floss since aligners are removable.
- More comfortable since they’re crafted from smooth plastic.
- Quick check-in appointments.
- Shorter average treatment times.
- Boosted self-confidence during treatment.
Spark Clear Aligners Are Also Available

You’ll be able to choose between Invisalign and Spark Clear Aligners. The Spark Clear Aligner System is made from BPA, latex, and phthalate-free materials, and its design is optimized to move teeth effectively and more comfortably. Additionally, the material used is nearly invisible, as it’s not as cloudy as other aligner options. When you come in for a consultation, our team will discuss both options with you, so you can make an informed decision on which brand you’d like to move forward with.
Invisalign FAQs
Does Invisalign Hurt?
If you had traditional braces in the past (or you know someone who did), you likely remember the uncomfortable adjustment appointments and soft tissue irritation from the metal brackets and wires. Don’t worry – you won’t experience the same issues with Invisalign. In fact, since the aligners are crafted from smooth plastic, the journey to a straighter smile is considerably more comfortable.
Tip: Transition to each new set of aligners in the series right before bed! That way, you can sleep through the period when your teeth are adjusting the most.
Can You Drink Coffee with Invisalign?
You can! There’s just one “but:” you need to remove your aligners first. There are a few reasons for this, starting with the fact that hot coffee can warp the plastic, causing your trays to no longer fit properly. It’s also worth noting that even iced coffee can cause stubborn stains and increase your risk of enamel erosion. Simply put, taking your aligners off beforehand benefits both your oral health and your orthodontic treatment.
How Should I Clean My Invisalign Aligners?
Keeping your aligners stain and odor-free really comes down to consistently implementing good habits into your daily routine. A few examples include rinsing them with clean, cool water each time you take them off, storing them in their designated case when you aren’t wearing them, and using a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean them each morning and night. If needed, you can also soak them in a clear aligner cleaner (or the cleaning crystals that came in your welcome kit) for 15 minutes or so while you eat your breakfast or dinner.
What Should I Do If I Lose One of My Invisalign Aligners?
Losing one of your aligners can quickly cause you to fall off track with your treatment plan, which is why it’s important to act quickly. First, pinpoint where you had them last. Then, carefully retrace your steps, making sure to look in “random” places, like the center console of your car or the waste bin in your kitchen. If you’ve looked everywhere but can’t find them, call our team at Loretto Family Dentistry. That way, we can determine if you need to wear your previous pair while replacements are made or if it’s safe to move on to the next set in the series a bit early.
How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?
Patients typically achieve the desired results in just 12-18 months with Invisalign, which is considerably shorter than traditional braces. That said, it’s possible for your treatment plan to fall outside of that time frame since there are several factors that play a role, including the severity of your case of malocclusion. The good news is that we can provide you with an estimate of your treatment timeline at your appointment as well as recommendations to help you stay on-track!
