Three in four adults suffer gum disease at some stage in their life. Proper brushing and flossing done daily is the best way to protect against periodontal disease and cavities. Tooth decay and periodontal disease are both brought on by bacterial plaque, a colorless film that sticks to the teeth at your gumline. Plaque continuously forms on teeth. By proper brushing and flossing daily, you can get rid of these germs and prevent periodontal disease, but even good oral care does not provide complete protection. A variety of factors can lead to periodontal disease. However, the disease is mainly caused by bacterial plaque. If not properly removed, plaque toughens into a rough, permeable substance called calculus (tartar). Importance of Periodontal MaintenanceThe bacteria present in plaque cause gum disease. The toxins these bacteria produce cause the body to tear down the bone that holds your teeth. If plaque isn’t removed, it may toughen and form tartar that can worsen your periodontal issue. As mentioned, even if you faithfully practice good oral hygiene, you may not be able to prevent the development of all tartar on your teeth. Tartar develops when saliva minerals calcify or harden the plaque on your teeth. Plaque is sticky and soft and develops constantly. It’s thus important to maintain oral hygiene by properly brushing and flossing daily to get rid of plaque before it solidifies into tartar. Flossing and brushing can help minimize the formation of tartar, but regular periodontal maintenance is needed to professionally clear out what has built up. During your maintenance appointment, our hygienist will assess and record the depths of your periodontal pockets as well as check for unseen periodontal problems.
